When people think about the dangers of homelessness, harsh winters are often the first thing that comes to mind. Freezing temperatures, snowstorms, and frostbite are well-known risks for individuals without stable housing. However, summer has its own set of challenges as temperatures rise and heat waves become more frequent, people experiencing homelessness face increased risks that can have severe consequences for their health and safety.


Individuals experiencing homelessness often have limited access to air-conditioned spaces, clean drinking water, shade, and medical care. Extended exposure to extreme heat can quickly lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and other life-threatening conditions. As climate change contributes to longer and more intense periods of hot weather, it is becoming increasingly important to recognize summer heat as a public health concern, especially for vulnerable populations.


Why Heat Waves Are Dangerous

A heat wave is a prolonged period of unusually high temperatures, often lasting several days. During these events, the human body must work harder to regulate its temperature. Without adequate hydration, rest, and protection from the sun, the risk of heat-related illnesses rises significantly.


For individuals experiencing homelessness, these risks are often heightened. Spending long hours outdoors, carrying personal belongings, or walking between services can increase exposure to direct sunlight and high temperatures. Many also have limited opportunities to cool down indoors or replace fluids lost through sweating. Even a single day of extreme heat can become dangerous when basic resources are difficult to access.


Barriers to Staying Cool

While many people can seek relief by staying inside air-conditioned homes, offices, or vehicles, individuals experiencing homelessness often have far fewer options.


Public libraries, recreation centres, and shopping malls may provide temporary relief, but these spaces have limited operating hours and may not always be easily accessible. Transportation can also be a challenge, particularly for individuals who must travel long distances to reach cooling centres or community services.


Finding shade is another difficulty. Urban environments often contain large areas of concrete and pavement that absorb and retain heat, making outdoor temperatures feel even hotter. Those sleeping outdoors may have few safe places to escape direct sunlight during the day.


Access to clean drinking water can also be inconsistent. Although many communities provide public water fountains, these may not always be available or conveniently located. Without regular hydration, the body's ability to regulate temperature becomes compromised.


Associated Health Risks

Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly, particularly during prolonged exposure to high temperatures.


One of the earliest signs is dehydration, which occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in. A few symptoms might include thirst, dizziness, headaches, fatigue, and confusion. Without treatment, dehydration can progress to more serious conditions.


Heat exhaustion is another common concern. Individuals may experience heavy sweating, nausea, weakness, muscle cramps, and fainting. If left untreated, heat exhaustion can develop into heat stroke, a medical emergency where the body's temperature rises to dangerous levels. Heat stroke can cause confusion, loss of consciousness, organ damage, and even death if immediate medical attention is not received. Some individuals may face even greater risks, including older adults, young children, people with chronic health conditions, and those taking medications that affect the body's ability to regulate temperature.


In addition, many people experiencing homelessness already undergo significant daily stress, uncertainty, and limited access to resources. Heat waves can increase exhaustion, disrupt sleep, and make it more difficult to travel between shelters, meal programs, healthcare appointments, and other essential services.


For individuals living with mental health conditions, prolonged exposure to heat can worsen symptoms and make accessing support even more challenging. Heat can also affect concentration, decision-making, and emotional well-being, adding further strain to already difficult circumstances.


These challenges highlight that extreme weather is not only uncomfortable, but it can significantly impact quality of life and overall health.


How Communities Can Help

Communities play an essential role in reducing the risks associated with extreme heat.


Many municipalities open cooling centres during periods of high temperatures, providing safe indoor spaces where individuals can rest, cool down, and access drinking water. Shelters and community organizations may also extend their hours or distribute bottled water, sunscreen, hats, and other heat-related supplies. Outreach teams often increase wellness checks during heat events, ensuring that vulnerable individuals have access to basic necessities and medical assistance if needed.

Supporting shelters and community organizations through financial donations or volunteering also helps ensure that essential services remain available during periods of extreme heat.
